AFCommerce: Open Source Ecommerce, Then and Now

In the network
Auto Learning Agents is free and open source, and that is not a new idea for us. The same commitment to giving away genuinely useful software traces all the way back to AFCommerce, our first open source project, launched in 2003 as one of the earliest ecommerce shopping carts on the web. The technology has changed, the philosophy has not.

Where Our Open Source Story Started

AFCommerce was the fifth ecommerce shopping cart ever built, released in 2003 when running an online store still meant stitching together your own software. It was open source from the start, free for anyone to download, run, and modify, at a time when that was far from the norm. Thousands of merchants used it to put their first products online, and the project earned a strong reputation and a deep base of links that still stand today.

That first project set a pattern we have followed ever since. Build something people genuinely need, give it away, and let the people who use it carry it forward. Auto Learning Agents is the latest expression of exactly that approach, a full agent platform you can self-host for free, with the same open source openness that AFCommerce had two decades earlier.

From Shopping Carts to AI Agents

The through-line from a 2003 shopping cart to a 2026 agent platform is consistency of values. Both are about handing people powerful software they control completely, running on their own infrastructure, with no lock-in and no gatekeeping. The shopping cart gave merchants ownership of their store. Auto Learning Agents gives builders ownership of their automation. The open source thread connects them directly, and the experience of supporting a widely used open source project for over twenty years informs how we build and release software today.

Ecommerce in the Age of AI

AFCommerce today is a deep library of ecommerce knowledge, covering how online stores are built, marketed, and run across many verticals. A growing share of that content focuses on how artificial intelligence is reshaping ecommerce: writing product descriptions at scale, powering recommendations, handling customer support, optimizing pricing, and automating the repetitive operations that used to eat a store owner's day. The questions merchants ask have shifted from how to set up a cart to how to put AI to work, and AFCommerce follows that shift.

Automating Ecommerce With Agents

This is where AFCommerce and Auto Learning Agents meet in practice. The same automation an online store needs, customer support, marketing outreach, content creation, and social media, maps directly onto the agent nodes that ship with Auto Learning Agents. A store owner reading AFCommerce to understand how AI changes ecommerce can run that exact automation themselves with a self-hosted agent platform, owning the whole stack the way AFCommerce always intended.

If you want the ecommerce side of the story, from the fundamentals to the AI-driven future, AFCommerce is the place built for it.
